hope seemed to think the taper was main cause, however he could not explain mine other then heavy riding.....

maxel lites are tapered and cause too much stress at the above break point, a normal axle or older maxel doesnt have the taper. the guy was surprised i did it on a normal axle

£325 for those 888's? I paid £130 for a set of the same forks in mint condition 2 years ago with a brand new sunline dm stem. I know you say they have ti coils but thats of little advantage.
